There’s comfort in falling. Over and out and apart and for someone. Don’t you worry. Just surrender to gravity. And to the forces of the unknown.MARYLOU was raised between forest and ocean. She knows a thing or two about tumbling and dropping. She’s a passionate dancer, an attentive listener. Her first language is painting, she’s created an array of artworks for labels such as Mathematics Recordings, Nona Records, and Lavibe. Her vocation is music, weaving a delicate mesh of tradition, psychedelia, improvisation, and avant-garde that can be experienced on the shows she regularly hosts on Cashmere Radio and Rinse France. She finds pleasure in repetition, motion, and surprise.
ZOË MC PHERSON feeds from a myriads of sources. An interdisciplinary artist with a kaleidoscopic output, she immerses herself in String Figures (the title of her 2018 album on SVS Records) and deals with States Of Fugue (her latest project on the platform SFX that she’s launched together with artist Alessandra Leone). Her live and DJ sets mess with the fabric of electronic music. Trippy field recordings bleed into powerful percussion, complex organic structures activate forgotten muscles, puppeteering the dancers into ever new patterns of movement and joy.
It’s the singularity of their vision that units MARYLOU and ZOË MC PHERSON. It’s their shared passion for the obscure and unheard that makes them the perfect match for a joint KOOKOO appearance. Japanese haiku master Bashō might have called it “waterfall music”. The gushing of the waters coming down, the force of something new that’s about to begin.
Fine artists YUKIHIRO TAGUCHI and CARLY FISCHER will absorb these impulses and transform them into visual experience. KOOKOO hosts MIEKO SUZUKI and ARA are happy to welcome you to a night of dancing, stumbling, letting loose. And experiencing the beauty of falling together.

Growing up in the darkness of eternal arctic winters, ILPO VÄISÄNEN had two best friends. Lee “Scratch” Perry and a power plant. It was only several solstices later that he met his third, a fellow named Mika Vainio. They were both as crazy about dub as they were about circuitry and decided to found a group. With Pan Sonic, the two of them went on to change the trajectories of electronic music, constantly breaking new ground, always staying true to their original approach.
You’d hardly believe that after his adventures with the likes of Alan Vega, Keiji Haino, Merzbow, or FM Einheit (and releases on Sähkö, Mego, Blast First et al.), ILPO VÄISÄNEN hasn’t played a solo show in Berlin for almost two decades. Never mind. On November 1 he’s back for a KOOKOO night where he’ll have a blast short-circuiting your brainwaves.
ILPO VÄISÄNEN’s main instrument is electricity. His setup is basic, mainly consisting of hardware he’s built himself or tweaked to his needs. In the era of the ubiquitous digital commodity he opts for the rude, the imperfect, the archaic yet futuristic. He says he makes music so you don’t forget the reasons for fighting.
The power of the basic elements is also DAVIDE LUCIANI’s realm. For KOOKOO, the media designer (and musician, mind you) develops an extensive installation based on the interaction of light sources, surfaces and sound objects. Just imagine the sweet dreams little Ilpo had of his big friend, the power plant, being dubbed around the battery room that OHM once was and you get an idea.
KOOKOO’s resident artists CARLY FISCHER and YUKIHIRO TAGUCHI will also present new works, and your hosts MIEKO SUZUKI and ARA will make sure that the fuses don’t blow.

It’s been ten years since Mieko Suzuki and Arno Raffeiner a.k.a. Ara started their KOOKOO adventure, back in the summer of 2009. They set out to create a playground for midnight dancers and vorspielers that very soon proved to be the ideal space for an ongoing dialogue between music, art, nightlife, and a very dedicated audience. In short: more than they could ever have hoped for.
That same summer, in 2009, Mo Loschelder hurled herself into another adventure of her own and established the MEDIA LOCA platform, an agency focusing on experimental electronic music with an amazing roster ranging from Gudrun Gut to Jan Jelinek, from Natalie Beridze to Ilpo Väisänen – and now adding Mieko Suzuki.
Since then, the MEDIA LOCA universe and the KOOKOO world have grown closer and closer, and there was no question that they had to celebrate their 10th anniversaries together. For this very special occasion, they’ve put together the line-up of their dreams with several KOOKOO heroes and a selection of MEDIA LOCA all stars.
ELECTRIC INDIGO
founder of the global female:pressure network and one of the most prominent figures in the international DJ scene. Her sets are characterized by clear vision and depth that can only result from true understanding of sound.
FRANK BRETSCHNEIDER
audiovisual jack of all trades and master of frequencies, Bretschneider is known for precise sound placement, complex, interwoven rhythm structures and his minimal, flowing approach. And for co-founding the Raster label, back in 1995, of course.
LUCRECIA DALT
the sharp mind of a methodical thinker combined with the restless heart of a passionate artist. Dalt seeks to create specific mental states through sound, her recent work developing around the ideas of repositioning fiction and time perception. Enjoy one of her rare and unique DJ sets at Kookoo X Media Loca!
EL PUMA
one of Berlin’s best kept secrets when it comes to pioneering underground DJs. El Puma has been around since the infamous Elektro Music Department collectively explored the endless possibilities of reduction and repetition.
CARLY FISCHER
a sculptural installation artist. She explores the precariousness of place and cultural identity in an increasingly globalised contemporary reality. Her paper replica environments inhabit an ambiguously hybrid and fascinating space.
YUKIHIRO TAGUCHI
a medium. Taguchi makes interventions based on the inspiration he gets from each specific site, mostly working with stop-motion video. This results in visual feedback loops enhancing the experience of everyone present in the given space at the given time.

OLDSPEAK is a musician and DJ from rural Michigan with a love for uncommon soundscapes and wonky grooves. In Berlin, he co-founded Average Negative, a cross-platform label releasing
music and curating visual art. Oldspeak is strongly opposed to the concept of Newspeak, a tool created to limit freedom of thought and concepts such as freedom, self-expression, individuality,
and peace.
SARAH LÜDEMANN is a fine artist based in Berlin. Her work is concerned with life cycles, birth, death and rebirth, focused on repetition, patterns, destruction, construction and resurrection,
centered around polar opposites and their motion forces, like gender, gaze, perception and communication. Repeat. Look. Repeat. Watch closely. Repeat again.
YUKIHIRO TAGUCHI is a medium. He creates installations and interventions based on the inspiration he gets from each specific site, mostly working with stop-motion video. This approach
results in visual feedback loops enhancing the experience of everyone present in the given space at the given time.
CARLY FISCHER is a sculptural installation artist from Melbourne, Australia. Her practice explores the precariousness of place and cultural identity in an increasingly globalised

It is hard to gain, easy to lose. Are you under it or beyond it? Do you want to get out of it? Defy it? Exercise it? You could regain it, retain it, or relax it. We’re talking about: regulating, operating, navigating, moderating, checking, surveiling. We’re talking about control.
And we’re talking about ANIKA. The way the German-British musician and DJ deals with control is fascinating. Her music makes tightly controlled use of creative tailspins, her songs and her live appearances reflect the joys of moving in a fixed framework – and then just losing it. When in the studio, ANIKA records live – three takes on tape, that’s it. On stage, her performance is minimalist and mesmerizing, thus enhancing the mystery that surrounds her.
Since ANIKA released her debut album in 2010, backed by Portishead’s Geoff Barrow and his band Beak>, her name stands for some of the most exciting music between dub and dance, between no wave influences and Nico timbre you could think of. For the KOOKOO night on July 10 at OHM Gallery, ANIKA will prepare a special DJ set of (un)controlled aloofness, strict laxity, and alluring wimpishness.
We’re talking about control here. And about the art of letting go… up to a point where you can’t be sure if there ever was something like focus, countenance, self-control – you just don’t know anymore because you’re so immersed into experiencing the here and now. Quite like the »Lady Scarface« Lydia Lunch tells us about on her famous Queen Of Siam record from 1980: if i had control i didn’t feel any yet…
1.5.2015 KOOKOO MAY DAY @ OHM feat. STEFAN GOLDMANN
Imagine someone finding himself in front of a blank record. So there’s a vinyl disc without any musical information on it, no tones, no beats, no sound waves at all? Fine, let’s just cut everything from scratch then, right here right now! That’s exactly what STEFAN GOLDMANN would do. That’s what he actually did with Ghost Hemiola, an album consisting of two vinyl records of empty loops, ready to be manipulated with
knives or razor blades, ready to let the music grow under your own hands. Now think about the same principle, just the other way around. So there’s an entire sound palette at one’s disposal, perfect down to the last detail? Fine, let’s start working with that then! Most producers would try to avoid that. But STEFAN GOLDMANN did just that for his Industry project, an in-depth examination of musical presets that resulted in a record and a book. 0% sound design, 100% presets.
These two works alone would make of STEFAN GOLDMANN one of the most daring and innovative protagonists of Germany’s electronic music scene. But there’s more of course: his inception of the Elektroakustischer Salon events at Berghain that bridge the gap between classical and electronic music, his record label Macro and Victoriaville, his scores for ballet or his remix of Stravinsky’s Le Sacre Du Printemps, not to mention his club hits like »The Maze« and »Lunatic Fridge«. Imagine what such a headstrong artist would imagine a DJ set to be like – the perfect mix of a preset of certain settings (two turntables, a mixing desk, an audience…) and a sonic blank canvas ready to be used in any imaginable way.

Are you aware of the fact that an estimated 117,213 new records have been released in the last 60 months, in Germany alone? You might want to ask yourself how many times your life has completely changed during that same period, wheter you finally survived adolescence, how many songs you’ve danced to and how many crazy nights out you may have experienced. Just in case none of those nights should have been really KOOKOO, we think it’s about time you discovered an overnight sensation, 43,824 hours in the making and now finally happening on June 6th at Ohm Gallery. 43,824 hours equals 1,826 days equals five years. That’s exactly how long Mieko Suzuki’s & Ara’s brain child KOOKOO has been around. And, let’s finally sum it up, it’s time to celebrate! Get your magic birthday candles ready for the fifth anniversary of KOOKOO! Kicking off in the summer of 2009 at Farbfernseher in Berlin-Kreuzberg, Kookoo created a unique and intimate underground party vibe, gathering a strong and dedicated following. The special atmosphere at Kookoo events is created through a constant dialogue of the artists responding to each other, a dialogue with the space at the venue – now the Ohm Gallery inside an immense defunct power plant building in Köpenicker Straße, Berlin-Mitte – and, most of all, a dialogue with the audience. From early on, the hosts Mieko Suzuki & Ara focused on collaborations with visual artists. The fifth anniversary sees a very special appearance of SARAH LÜDEMANN. Her art is based on life cycles, birth, death and rebirth, on repetition, patterns, destruction, construction and resurrection, on polar opposites and their motion forces, like gender, gaze, perception and communication. All of which predestines her to trigger one of those unforgettable KOOKOO dialogues.
Japanese artists YUKIHIRO TAGUCHI and INK AGOP are both regular contributors to the overall KOOKOO experience. A night at Ohm can hardly be imagined without their video projections and ever changing stop and go animations that, to a great extent, are created live on the spot for everyone to see and immediately become part of it. Australian artist CARLY FISCHER, over the years, has created, arranged and photographed an entire body of work of her paper sculptures specifically for KOOKOO’s flyer and poster artworks. Carly’s great five year anniversary piece will be presented in a special light box in the entrance area at Ohm. Last but not least, MIEKO SUZUKI & ARA will play a back to back DJ set all the night through, spinning all their favourites and beloved classics of those past 43,824 hours that have been kookoo indeed.
