Fifty-four black-and-white photographic portraits of Berghain musicians, bouncers, and staff—pictures of people acting within the context of Berlin club culture and installed to create a multimedia sculpture: Black Box (2015) unites the photographic work of Sven Marquardt with the music of producer and Berghain Resident DJ Marcel Dettmann. The interplay between somber, mystical symbolism and a rough aesthetic presents the most important figures in the Berlin nightlife scene around Marquardt and Dettmann in a striking and intimate way. The two met for the first time in the 1990s at the legendary club Ostgut, which became famous worldwide a few years later as Berghain. From its beginnings up to the present day, the club stands for the zeitgeist and attitude of creatives in and from Berlin since the fall of the Wall, and it continues to fascinate people from all over the world to this day.

As part of the program of events accompanying the exhibition No Photos on the Dance Floor! Berlin 1989—Today at C/O Berlin, the two artists will talk about their collaboration but also about their personal and artistic experiences as children in divided and reunified Germany.
