Deutsch:

English:

How did you come to do what you do? When did the first idea of creating the label came out?

Music was always a big part of our lives (Patrick Gottfried & Perry Patelski). Ever since we were little kids we listened to music all day long and started to play instruments like grandpa’s piano, clarinet and saxophones. At the end of the 80s, beginning of the 90s there was a new streaming, at that time only house music and we started to buy vinyl and DJing. First at and for friends, then followed small clubs and then big clubs and festivals such as Nature One, Turbinenhalle Oberhausen, M-Bia Berlin, Butan Wuppertal, Delta Musik Park Duisburg, Matrix in Bochum, Disco Peppermill Heerlen. At the end of the 90s we started to produce our own songs. Quickly followed by first releases. In 2018 we decided to start our own techno label called T-Records and made it a reality in 2019. Initially, we wanted to release our own sounds with it. Now the label is growing steadily and we dedicate ourselves to bigger goals, like building a techno community where everyone can live their own creativity and style.

Some statistics, since the label was created , how many releases, how many vinyls and how many packages/parcels have you made/send?

The idea to found T-Records came in 2018, this idea have 2019 into reality. At the beginning of 2019 followed the first releases through our label T-Records. The first album contained 12 tracks and is called Elements. This was followed by another 12 releases and there will be many more to come. Currently there is a release every month. Getting the releases out on vinyl was going to be a dream so let’s see what the future holds.

From which country do most of your buyers come from?

Today it is very easy to follow from which country the people listen and buy our releases. Germany is the #1 techno country, followed by South America like Colombia, which surprised us a lot. Then comes America, Portugal, Ireland and the Netherlands.

What is the release of which you are most proud of?

Honestly – to every (new) release. There are tracks that are better than others and some are more popular and successful. But every track is from us and we put a lot of time and heart into it, which makes every track special for us.

If we had to choose tracks, it would be Floating and Lignis Aes, which were released through T-Records. We are also very proud of our release Addicted which was mixed for the Ayako Mori Physical Techno Records Remix Contest. This remix was number 2 in the Beatport Album Charts for weeks.

Can you describe to us what a typical day at the office means to you?

The day starts pretty typically with a coffee :) Afterwards we check our mails and social media channels, e.g. to answer questions and to collect ideas and impulses for new content. The best part is when we start Ableton and the creative music process begins. We watch regular tutorials to stay up to date and learn the latest techniques and trends. We also like to work with other artists, so we learn from each other. Our tasks also include developing graphic promo and marketing material, such as videos, promo clips, music covers, etc. Since we don’t have an employed graphic designer, we do all these tasks ourselves. We also organize our own parties, like release parties and beach parties with livestreams. Most of the time we divide the tasks, everyone has his special fields and we support each other where we can.

At the end of the day, as soon as we have an idea for a track, for example, we decide whether to pursue the project further or to discard the idea and work on another project the next day.

Who’s in your Team? Are you a Music Producer or DJ?

Currently T-Records consists of artists, producers and label owners Perry Patelski and Patrick Gottfried. We both started as DJs. Already many years ago we have developed and produce all tracks ourselves. Meanwhile we divide our work very well. Perry spends most of his time creating new tracks in his studio and Patrick is a master in mixing and mastering. Over the years Patrick has built up his own studio called Adrenaline Vibes. Regarding management and marketing tasks Rebecca Jauck supports us, who has studied media informatics and has many years of professional experience in this field.

Which distribution channels do you use?

All releases are distributed via Distrokid. The advantage of Distrokid is that the releases appear on all mayor portals where techno fans can listen to and buy the tracks. This includes Spotify, Apple Music, Beatport and many more.

Did you use youtube and how strong/weak the impact?

A site like YouTube is very important to reach more techno fans. We publish all our tracks on YouTube as well. In addition, we used YouTube for livestreams, especially during the Corona time. The good thing about this is that they can still be viewed after the livestream, so techno lovers can listen and watch the sets afterwards. In the future we will also upload all our DJ sets from festivals and club gigs to YouTube, so that fans who couldn’t be at the festival can still listen and watch the sets. Currently we don’t have that many subscribers on YouTube. We don’t care about the number of subscribers, we care that the ones we have share the same love for techno as we do.

Have you ever helped yourself with buying clicks & plays on soundcloud?

*laugh* Good question but no. We have already thought about it to give ourselves a boost but then we ourselves know that it is not real. Even if we are aware that it would probably help for marketing reasons.

Currently there is a real person behind every follow, subscription, listener and play we have and we are very happy about that.

Where do you find hungry and ambitious artists?

Long live social media channels like Instagram. Through content and postings many artists get in touch and send us their links to their tracks. Some also approach us at our gigs, where we play. Often there are talented DJs and producers and we like to listen to their tracks. So far there have been collaborations, for example in livestreams (see: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLds49oINx5ukow7RJEorJdGIvtkS55IkK). We are curious how it will go on.

What impact does streaming with spotify have on the economic situation of an indie label?

This can be seen from two sides. Young and talented producers can now step into the spotlight faster and thus get attention from major labels and promoters. However, there are also many releases on Spotify that don’t have the quality and level as really good artists. The creative process is important but the quality of the tracks and the mixing and mastering is just as important and these are often neglected.

When you look for new music to sign what are some key elements and factors you are looking for, aside from it being a great track obviously?

What we strongly pay attention to is that it is not a copy of a known „main stream“ track. Much more important is the own sound and style. In addition, we need a connection to the artist and it is important to us that the track has not been sent to 2000 other labels. In addition, we like to look in our area Düsseldorf – Cologne – Aachen – Maastricht – Antwerp, because our goal is to build a sustainable community.

How would you describe the style and vision of your Label?

The label moves and goes with the times, just like we do. We make music with feeling. That means the sound of today can already be different in half a year. Currently we make tracks with repeating melodies, heavy kicks and basslines.

The vision of the label is to create a social environment where creativity can flourish. Our goals are to grow as people and as a company, to be independent and to be a pioneer for the local community and a role model for the environment.

What are some sites or apps that you use to listen/ find new tracks?

We use Beatport, Soundcloud and YouTube the most. We also get tracks sent to us via Instagram and email, which we love to listen to.

For producers out there sending in their demos via emails, what are some tips you would give them on professionally sending in their track to you?

It’s hard work, we recommend watching tutorials and developing your own sound and style. You should never give up and keep at it, because sometimes you are closer than you think. When sending demos you should be creative and as already mentioned, don’t send to 2000 labels, but rather try to get into the label of your choice where you feel comfortable and can support and learn from each other.
