Following on from two highly regarded releases on Last Year At Marienbad, Amsterdam based producer Retromigration makes his debut on the launch of parent label KARAMÜRSELLİ with ‘Can’t Go’, a hyper-kinetic and rapturous piece of dance music that unleashes spellbinding spirit which is sure to ensnare any dancefloor.
Amsterdam based Retromigration has made the notion of making waves feel like a standard whenever a new record of his floats into view, such is the reverence and respect for his sound and craft. Inspired by a myriad of genres, such as soul, funk, jazz and hip-hop, his auditory identity is one of profound melodic effusion and expert percussive sequences, which are absorbed within life affirming atmospheres and sensory spaces. Flickering within the wide spectrum of deep house, Retromigration’s music dabbles with the curious in-between spaces, with an acute eye and ear channeling into the threads between genres that enable light bulb moments – and ever lasting musical experiences.
In a career built on continual self-evolution and musical morphology, ‘Can’t Go’ feels like yet another landmark in Retromigration’s revered career. The EP tunes itself into the pulsating energies of the club, drawing exquisite lines between bass music, footwork, garage and jungle.
The title track is seeped in rhythmic power, with heavy set kicks and high end hats providing the framework for echoing bass notes and sparse chords, which leads up to the euphoric vocal sample to take lead – ‘everywhere I turn’ rings true, as the heads get down and the feet work in unison.
Next up is the Siu Mata and Amor Satyr remix of ‘Cant Go’. Their take centres itself on rhythmic palpitations and hard groove, drawing focus to cavernous spaces and placing the vocals in a place of prominence right from the off. A fitting flip to the original, and as a rounding off of the experience, it hits the mark expertly.
‘No More’ introduces itself in similar fashion, with its sharp footwork-esqe feel and powerful top end melodic touches engrossing the floor with passion and energy.
Finally, the EP is completed with ‘Distant’ which features a fuller set of harmonies and melodic touches, with a tear jerking chordal line complimented by a spiritual sax solo. The breakdown fluctuates with expert precision, driving down through the layers in creating a sinuous flow of vibrancy, captivating all those who come across it.
