Emilio Mustafá Announces Funk City LP, A Groove-Driven Journey Through House, UK Garage and Latin Club Culture
Colombian DJ and producer Emilio Mustafá returns with his most ambitious project to date, Funk City, a full-length album arriving this September via his own imprint, Noisy Neighbours. Crafted over the course of a year between Bogotá and his new home in Barcelona, Funk City is a vibrant collection that blends house, deep house, tech house, UK garage, electro and Latin influences into a cohesive celebration of underground dance music.
A respected figure within Colombia’s electronic music scene, Emilio Mustafá has built a reputation for groove-led productions inspired by ’90s house, French deep house, hip-hop, salsa and Latin rhythms. His music has appeared on labels including Miura Records, Berlin House Music, Flat 22, Uré Guay Records and Y4 Collective, while his performances have taken him to renowned venues such as Baum, Armando Records and Video Club. In 2021, he co-founded Noisy Neighbours, a platform dedicated to showcasing Latin American house music on a global stage.
Opening with the jazzy, spoken-word introduction featuring Aguafiestas, Funk City quickly moves into deeper territory with the rolling house grooves of „The Dub Project“ before weaving through UK garage, funk-infused house, disco and techno textures. „Cheese Pull“ featuring Bralan Arias pairs squelchy basslines with improvisational Rhodes piano, while „Short Skirt Funk“ locks into a hypnotic, driving groove. „Watcha Gonna Do“ brings grime-tinged UKG energy before „Discoqueta“ raises the tempo with an infectious disco workout. „Da Hype“ fuses rugged house rhythms with hip-hop-inspired vocal chops, while „Invisible Criminal“ draws influence from new jack swing. The album’s title track, „Funk City“, is a high-energy roller that channels the spirit of ’90s garage house with infectious jazzy overtones, serving as one of the record’s defining moments. The penultimate track, „Noche Entera“, shifts into a more techno-influenced space and features Emilio’s own voice, adding a personal touch before the album concludes with a fresh reinterpretation of the title track from fellow producer Yesca.
More than just a collection of club tracks, Funk City reflects Emilio Mustafá’s musical identity, bridging Latin American roots with European club culture while remaining firmly grounded in underground dance music. The result is an album packed with infectious grooves, soulful musicianship and timeless dancefloor energy.
