The Afters launches with the story of Robot84: a 35-year journey through the underground dance scene

The Afters makes long-form portraits from the underground, stories about the records, rooms and people behind the music that moves us.

House, Balearic, downtempo, folk. The kind of music that makes you stop and ask: What was that record? Who made it? Where did it come from? And what did it take to get there?

Told in the artists’ own words, at their own pace, and scored with their own music, The Afters goes beyond the usual artist interview to explore the lives and stories behind underground culture.

Season one begins with Scott Ferguson, aka Robot84, whose story spans 35 years inside the underground dance scene, from Scotland to London, Ibiza and back.

As Robot84, Scott’s records have been played by DJs around the world. There is one thing he had never experienced: hearing one of his own records played in a club.

Then, on Boxing Day 2022, Scott suffered an ischaemic stroke while in Gran Canaria.

From his hospital bed, as he began the long process of recovery, he sent out an edit he had been sitting on: Robot84 vs The Raff ‘Get It Right Next Time’.

In January 2023, Jon Sa Trinxa played the track at Café Mambo in Sydney and kept playing it. For Scott, hearing his music travel back into the world became a source of confidence and focus as he learned to walk again.

The resulting portrait follows Scott through the rooms, records, relationships, loss and recovery that have shaped his life in music, and his decision to stop holding back.

Told alongside Bill Brewster, Colleen Cosmo Murphy, Pete Gooding and Jon Sa Trinxa, as well as Scott’s family and friends, the story is scored almost entirely with Scott’s own productions, edits and remixes.

It is a story about underground music, but also about identity, friendship, resilience and what happens when the thing you have spent your life creating suddenly takes on a meaning you never expected.

The Afters is an audio documentary series about the people and stories behind underground music and culture.
