On 25.03. BRUTALISM will highlight the parallels between brutalist spatial and sonic structures as well as visual and media-based art for the second time in Gottfried Böhms St. Gertrud Church in Cologne. For this occasion, the Cologne based crew welcomes Malibu and Aho Ssan for a live concert.

Malibu is a French electronic musician whose work sails between ambient and ethereal music in the style of Enya or Burial. The sound is of a quiet intensity inspired by soft reverbed vocals and melodic chord progressions – immersive, like a sea of synthetic strings and choirs. Every month she explores the same ideas in her radio show United In Flames, with the help of various guests. After releasing the single „Held“ on the much lauded PAN Compilation Mono No Aware in 2017, „One Life“ was Malibu’s first record, released in November 2019 on both Joyful Noise Recordings and Uno Nyc. It is followed by its sort of sequel, her sophomore EP „Palaces of Pity“ released in 2022 on Uno Nyc, which years ago published one of the first records by post-club icon Arca. It’s a dystopian piece masterfully arranged by Malibu, hyper-harmonious and the soundtrack to Generation Benzos all at once.

Aho Ssan is the artist name of Paris based Niamké Désiré. After studying graphic design and cinema, he began to compose electronic music and create his own digital instruments. Shortly thereafter he went on to win the Foundation France television prize for his soundtrack to the film of Ingha Mago in 2015 and has worked on several projects related to IRCAM/GRM in France. In 2022 he released a collaborative album “Limen” with the artist KMRU and is also part of the SHAPE artist platform. Organized each year by a union of 16 festivals and arts centers – including the CTM festival in Berlin and the Unsound festival in Krakow. His music has been acclaimed by various media such as NPR, Pitchfork, Resident Advisor, Liberation and Les Inrockuptibles. Aho Ssan will release his next solo album “Rhizomes” on Nicolas Jaar’s Other People label.

Live visuals will come from Planar. The supporting program will feature live sets by BRUTALISM Soundsystem, a kinetic installation by artist Pauline Simon as well as the dance performance „Resonant Creature“ by Yi-Chen Chen, Hannah Reena Reif and Lena Valentina Hauth.
