In the 3rd installment of its 4-part concert-series „From Russia with Soul“, Ensemble Mini – the critically acclaimed soloists of Germany’s top orchestras – continues its mission to make classical music cool with a crazy Russian feast of Klezmer, Gypsy, Balkan and Orthodox music. In our unique late-night concert format, the evening begins with a chilled lounge and bar followed by a 60 mins concert-extravaganza, ending with Berlin’s coolest DJs and pop-up jam-sessions in our signature after-show party.
100 years ago in 1919, during the Russian Civil War, the Soviets officially began their repression of Jews, seizing assets, dissolving communities and arresting Rabbis. Already many of Russia’s great composers and artists had left. It’s in this context that the world-class super-sonic-soloists of Ensemble Mini come together with Russia’s most famous Klezmer band „Dobranotch“ in new arrangements by the expert Russian-Jewish composer Evgeny Kharzdan to explore the culturally eclectic Russian soul.
Rachmaninov’s Symphonic Dances completes the programme, from which we explore another central pillar of Russia’s soul, the Russian Orthodox Church. Composed in exile in USA, Rachmaninov’s final work of 1940 harks back to both his orthodox roots, as well as earlier pre-revolution symphonic works. It’s an incredible example of how cultural roots can transcend religious, national and political identity.
