Ara Lil Yoon sind ein britisch-maltekisches Post-Punk-Quintett, das 2017 in Berlin gegründet wurde. Der Sound der Band vereint melodische Basslinien, kraftvolle Drums, verzerrte Gitarrenriffs und urbane Wortkunst zu einem markanten Stil, der sich zwischen Alternative, Punk und lyrischer Performance bewegt. So entstehen düstere Mollmelodien, pulsierende Energien und poetische Erzählungen, die sich zu einem vielschichtigen, beinahe symphonischen Klangbild verweben.

Ursprünglich in Malta von Julian Wood (Gitarre) und Francesco Nicastro (Bass) ins Leben gerufen, fand die Gruppe nach mehreren Besetzungswechseln in Berlin zu ihrer heutigen Formation. Seit 2020 stehen Jack Molloy (Gesang) und Jyoti Sekhawat (Schlagzeug) mit ihnen auf der Bühne. Der Sound der Band wird unter anderem von Post-Punk-Legenden wie Pixies oder Joy Division geprägt, aber auch Genres wie Hip-Hop, Folk und Jazz fließen in ihr Schaffen ein.

Im Sommer 2023 veröffentlichte die Band ihre erste EP Taste, begleitet von einem Musikvideo, gefolgt vom Debütalbum Triboulet. Die neun Songs widmen sich Themen wie Trauma, Weltschmerz, Sucht, Sexualität, politischer Manipulation, der Widersprüchlichkeit des Selbst und der Jung’schen Idee des Schattens – mit dem Ziel, diesen Erfahrungen durch Selbstermächtigung und Verantwortung zu begegnen.

Ara Lil Yoon are a British-Maltese post-punk quintet based in Berlin. Their sound blends melodic basslines, powerful drums, distorted guitar riffs, and urban spoken-word lyricism, forging a distinctive style that bridges alternative rock, punk energy, and poetic performance. The result is a vivid interplay of minor harmonies, driving rhythms and narrative depth, shaping a dense, near-symphonic sonic identity.

Originally founded in Malta by Julian Wood (guitar) and Francesco Nicastro (bass), the band moved to Berlin and—after several lineup changes—solidified its current formation when vocalist Jack Molloy and drummer Jyoti Sekhawat joined in 2020. Influenced by post-punk pioneers like Pixies and Joy Division as well as genres such as hip-hop, folk, and jazz, Ara Lil Yoon combine raw energy with literary ambition.

In the summer of 2023, they released their first EP Taste, alongside a music video, followed by their debut album Triboulet. The nine-track release tackles subjects such as trauma, weltschmerz, addiction, sexuality, political manipulation, the contradictory nature of the self, and Jung’s idea of the Shadow—approaching these themes through a lens of responsibility and self-empowerment rather than resignation.

Ihr Sound bewegt sich zwischen wütend und verträumt und lässt sich von Bands wie Wet Leg und Amyl and The Sniffers inspirieren, ohne dabei an Eigenständigkeit einzubüßen. Die 2023 gegründete Band besteht aus Jacquie Hirt (Gesang), Liam Harrison (Gitarre), Przemek Sztandera (Gitarre), Niclas Liebling (Bass) und Adrian Lizarraga (Schlagzeug). Bekannt für energiegeladene Live-Shows und Texte, die politische Themen mit schwarzem Humor verbinden, haben Matching Drapes sich in kurzer Zeit zu einem aufregenden Newcomer der Nach ihrem ersten Showcase bei der Tallinn Music Week 2025 und einem Auftritt im Harpa in Reykjavík ist die Band hungrig nach mehr.
Nach Shows beim Wilde Möhre Festival 2025 und als Support der australischen Künstlerin Divebar Youth in der Kantine am Berghain arbeitet Matching Drapes nun daran, das Jahr mit neuer Musik abzuschließen. Matching Drapes is ready to be heard, you better get ready to listen.
