24. April – 26. April

Inkonst
Bergsgatan 29, 214 22 Malmö

Inkonst will pull out all the stops during the last weekend of April, bringing CTM (Berlin) and Unsound (Krakow), the international giants for experimental music and art, to Malmö for a royal festival. Legendary Elektronmusikstudion (EMS) in Stockholm and Malmö’s own Inter Arts Center will also play important parts in making this a grand celebration of sound, light and art.

The individual pieces of the festival program are beginning to fall in to place and we can promise a world class line up, from abstract experiments in sound to new and inspiring dance music.

During the course of the weekend, we will also work together with Sorgenfri Kultur where the festival’s nightly activities will take place. Please note that these after hours sessions will be limited to guests with Festival passes only.

The Intontal festival is a collaboration between Inkonst, CTM, Unsound, EMS, IAC, Goethe-Institut and the Polish Institute. This project is realised with the gracious support of Kulturrådet, Kultur Skåne, Malmö Stad, Goethe-Institut and Polska institutet.

Additional acts will follow shortly.

Pole & MFO
We are proud to present the world premiere for Pole’s new album and live concept. Pole, aka Stefan Betke, has excelled in all matters concerning dub during his long and glorious career, breaking genre restraints and creating new musical paths with the warmth of his music and the sheer force of his dubby bass. Accompanying Pole is MFO, aka Marcel Weber, a household name in the international video art scene, who has worked together with the likes of Kode 9, Kuedo and Oni Ayhun as well as the Opera national de Paris and the Akademie der Künste Berlin, to name but a few.

Frank Bretschneider & Pierce Warnecke ”SINN + FORM”
Raster Noton legend Frank Bretschneider and acclaimed visual artist Pierce Warnecke have created an extraordinary audio visual artwork, “SINN + FORM” (Sense and Form). First presented at CTM last year, this will be the second viewing. Intonal visitors can expect to be wowed and hypnotized by this intense love affair of sound and light.

Hypnobeat
James Dean Brown, aka Romulus Coeurque and Insect Commander, initiated the Hypnobeat project back in 1983, and though it has mutated many times since, the basic idea remains the same: To create a rhythmical Bermuda Triangle where the listeners and dancers will lose themselves completely. This is realised through the use of rhythmical patterns created on synchronized vintage Roland gear, loving and fighting with one another, creating a sort of decorticated tribal state. To this end, new Hypnobeat member Helena Hauff fits in perfectly, adding her gritty yet sharp acid improvisations to the melting pot.

Porn Sword Tobacco & SVN
Intonal presents another prime world premiere performance in the collaboration of leftfield house and techno producers Porn Sword Tobacco & SVN. Labels like Aniara, Acido and our own Kontra-Musik have all recognized their expert abilities in creating mood music: If you wake up a sunny Saturday morning feeling throughly rested and ready to take on whatever the world’s about to throw at you, Porn Sword Tobacco & SVN will have the perfect track to accompany you. If you wake up a rainy Tuesday, seriously contemplating to skip work and just lie around reading old magazines, Porn Sword Tobacco & SVN will have the perfect track for that too.

The Durian Brothers
There are lots of producers out there who try really hard to do “something else”. Then, there are these chosen few artists that effortlessly are “something else” in their own right. The Durian Brothers and their magical array of modified turntables, sequencers and machines belong in this selected circle. The Durian Brothers recently released Das Macht Modern, a highly acclaimed mini-album on Kontra-Musik and are now appearing for the very first time in Sweden. This is dance music in a whole new way. New, but somehow primordial at the same time.

Vinyl Terror & Horror
Danish artist duo Camilla Sørensen och Greta Christensen experiment with the vinyl record as a medium of sound, building sculptural machines out of Turntables and everyday objects, creating freakish soundscapes perfect for surrealistic horror movies. Also, if you happen to be a neat vinyl collector this will be terrifying for other reasons too. You have been warned.

Klara Lewis
Klara Lewis made her astonishing debut only last year, but to describe her as a “rising star” in the electronica scene would be incorrect. She’s already up there with the best of them. This fact was pinpointed by the revered label Editions Mego, normally releasing giants like Fennesz, Marcus Schmickler, Mika Vainio and Emeralds, now putting forward Klara Lewis and her very first album Ett. Her music is emotive but open sourced, highly rhythmical but embracing. In short, Klara Lewis is no doubt one of best Swedish artists right now, regardless of genre.

Rashad Becker
Rashad Becker is the mastering genius behind renowned Dubplates and Mastering in Berlin, where he has lent his magical ears and hands to over 1200 albums. In 2013 he decided to move to the front of the signal chain and consequently released his acclaimed debut album Traditional Music of a Notional Species Vol 1 on PAN. The Liminal really nailed it with this quote: ”Whatever he does, it seems Becker has the knack of giving sound its voice”.

We Will Fail
CTM and Unsound favourite We Will Fail, aka Aleksandra Grünholz, creates “peculiar techno” via the use of collages of field recordings, tape samplers and synthesizers. With Aleksandra also being a graphic designer, a visual aspect seems to be embedded in her music, generating fantastical images behind the eyes and ears of the listener.

Zamilska
Last year Zamilska singlehandedly managed to relocate Warsaw to a new musical location right between Birmingham and Berlin with her debut single Quarrel, later followed up by the album Untune. Zamilska’s uncompromising, bass-heavy techno takes no prisoners and lets nothing stand in its way, not even basic geography.

Lumisokea
The Belgian-Italian duo Lumisokea seek to explore the mental falling effect of entering trance-like states with their monotonous, industrial dance music. Together with AntiVJ-artist Yannick Jacquet, Lumisokea will try to create a collective higher state of consciousness, to quote a Josh Wink-track, by altering the audience perception of time and space. Lumiosokea means “snow-blind” in Finnish – a good reason to turn your gaze inwards.

COH & Tina Frank
Ivan Pavlov, aka COH (which means “sleep” or “dream” and is pronounced “son”) is a core member of the Raster-Noton-collective. Tina Frank is a graphical designer, media artist and a professor of Visual Communication vid University of Arts and Industrial Design in Linz, well known for all-important record label Mego’s graphical profile. Together these two geniuses will synchronize colours, patterns and live Raster-Noton electronica in real-time. It really doesn’t get much better.

RSS B0ys
RSS B0ys is a shamanistic techno project inspired by the trance-evoking force of West African drum circles. The two veiled and nameless polish musicians combine analogue hardware with e-drums in order to bring techno back to the source.

Marcus Schmickler
Cologne-based composer Marcus Schmickler has been an important catalyst for the electronic music avant-garde for over 20 years, with connections to the legendary Kontakta collective, A-musik label and Editions Mego, where his two solo-albums have been released. Marcus Schmickler explores the connections between science and music and will take Intonal on an experimental journey into sound.

Mats Lindström – Part VI by Ákos Rózmann
Mats Lindström, head of Elektronmusikstudion and the creator of the ingenious work Music for Russian Aircraft Engines in St Petersburg, for example, now presents a very special diffusion concert, utilizing twelve speakers. At Intonal, he will perform the work VI by the Hungarian-Swedish composer Ákos Rózmann.

Jakob Riis
IAC (Inter Art Center) presents the project Acousmatic for the People and invites the experimental musician Jakob Riis for a different and exciting diffusion concert with focus on noise.

Frederikke Hoffmeier aka Puce Mary
The Copenhagen-based sound artist Frederikke Hoffmeier is much in demand now and tours around the globe with her experimental and industrial noise performance Puce Mary. April begins with a show in Tokyo for the Posh Isolation artist, but Puce Mary will return in time for a noise extravaganza at Intonal.

BNNT
Konrad Smoleński & Daniel Szweds make up the the performance group BNNT, and their speciality is Soundbombing: unexpected sound performances in public spaces. With their home made bomb – a missile with strings – the group creates an overwhelming wall of sound, a combination of punk rock, noise and massive rhythms.
