Over the past 15 years, Ellis has dedicated himself to crafting a formidable and instinctive sound, one which draws strength from relationships with analog instruments and a passion for exploring the boundaries between eras, scenes, and genres. Ellis’s love affair with the electronic music scenes of NYC, Detroit, and Chicago from the 90s can certainly be felt within his releases, but with an original and distinctive flair that allows his work to shine. His sound contains several cutting-edge approaches to sound design and progression, wrapped up within a meaningful amalgamation of House, Techno, and Tech house. His production efforts have seen him release on the likes of Prozpektiva, Motech, and Rhythm Control, to name but a few. Limitlessun Recordings, founded by Ellis in 2019, has become the primary source for his outputs, with recent releases building upon his sound alongside its sublabel Only Raw Sun, which comprises of his live, improvised releases.
‘Limitlessun Summer Jamz Vol 1.’ is the latest chapter of Ellis’ musical journey, and the sound contained within is one with an eye firmly fixed upon the dancefloor. The title track kicks into life with a hypnotic rhythm section, which sets the parameters for high-octane, reverberating synths.
The overall array of sounds is transfixing and is sure to dazzle dancefloors with its groove. ‘For Daze’ lands next, and this one begins in proggy, hazy territories. The drums skip and slip along, providing vacuums for the acid line and scattered melodic elements to shift in and out of view. Upbeat key lines shine throughout, presented at the right moments to allow the progression to continue onwards with maximum effectiveness.
‘Direct in your time’ comes next, and the rhythm section gets this one going. The track slowly builds into its next form, which welcomes to the fold delicate pads and an array of textured sounds. A swirling, crystallised key sequence is the star here, drawing focus and adding warmth to proceedings. To wrap things up, ‘Keep At It’ shifts into view. The kicks and textures provide the basis, with an earworm of a bassline shifting around the central foundation, with cascading melodies and quick stabs helping to establish the track’s melodic core. The evolution of the rhythm section sends the track into overdrive, harnessing the power of the dance and propelling it to new heights.
‘Summer Jamz Vol 1’ contains all the quality that has revealed itself throughout Ellis’s discography, and the tunes here will do wonders on any dancefloor they encounter. Thoughtful, expertly poised and considered, each track can create fever pitches and release boundless energy, all the while serving up endless variety and enticing listeners to dive right back in.
