SomoS is delighted to present the durational performance 111-0 by current Artist-in-Residence Huiquan “J” Jiang. Continuing her artistic exploration of Eastern spirituality, the multidisciplinary Chinese artist takes the Vedic cosmological system as a starting point of a generative process that creates a synaesthetic bridge between painting and movement.

A long-time practitioner of Tai chi and yoga, Jiang’s drawing, painting, and performing are led by intuition and the mindful engagement of her body.

As she explains,
“While drawing or painting, I pay close attention to coordination and positioning. It renders as the momentum of line and color amidst their interactions. Complementarily moving and dancing on- and off balance, each line or color is considered an independent individual. Their weight and awareness lead my hand fluidly to move and swirl towards the gravity that exclusively exists on the canvas. To me, they are alive beings, creating their stories on canvas through the intuitive movements of my hands.”

The second in a new cycle of performances, 111-0 is based on Huiquan Jiang’s research into descriptions of the universe from sources such as the Surya Siddhanta (“Sun Treatise”), the ca. 4th-century Hindu text on astronomy and timekeeping, written in classical Indian verse. Inspired by the often very accurate writings that merge spirituality, science, and poetry, Jiang aims to reveal the subject’s inconceivable aura into physical color, shape, and body movement.

The event occurs at SomoS’ exhibition space and is accessible to the audience throughout its duration, February 22 – 26, 2022, daily 2 – 7 pm. Entry is, as always, free.
